Pinterest Project #2 - Sharpie Mugs!

Hello readers!!!  So I have another Pinterest Project to share with you today!

At the end of June, two of our best friends got married!  Their wedding had a very whimsical book theme since they are book teachers and book lovers, and so I wanted to give them a gift that reflected their style!  One of the things that I wanted to include in this gift was some very special and personalized mugs -- because what book lover doesn't love curling up with a good book and a mug of their favorite hot drink?  I know I do!  =)

I was inspired by this fabulous tutorial from the girls over at A Beautiful Mess.  If you haven't checked out their blog yet you need to!  They have so many great projects and fabulous ideas!  Here's a link to her sharpie project -- and it is great!

I secretly asked the bride and groom to be about their favorite hot drinks, and then I got to work on their mugs!  I did one side in the same style as the original tutorial, but then I added Mr. and Mrs. to the other sides of the mugs!  They turned out great!

  • Two plain white mugs - bought at a $1 store for $1 each!
  • Sharpies in various colors - I used black, brown, magenta and lime green!  I used what I had, but each Sharpie would retail at an office supplies store for about $1 each - $4 for my total project
  • An oven!
This whole project, if I had also bought the sharpies, would have cost me $6!  In essence it only cost me $2 and the product turned out SUPER cute!

First - make sure your mugs are clean and dry!  After that, just draw on the design as you'd like it to look!  Be careful when you are coloring with a sharpie, it will pick up previous layers of color so you have to be very careful!  Once you have achieved the desired design or wording on your mug, simply bake for 350 degrees for 30 minutes!  When you take out the mugs allow them to cool completely!  Here's what mine looked like (note that the bride is right handed and the groom is left handed):

NOTE:  One thing that you need to know is that these Sharpie Mugs are HAND WASH ONLY.  If you put them through the dishwasher, it will ruin the design partially.  As long as you hand wash them, they should last for a long time!  =)

So, here's what my gift basket looked like for my friends before I added the card (a shame that I forgot to snap a picture of it before I took the gift to the wedding - it was SUPER cute!)

Well, I hope you enjoyed this project!  Please stop back again and leave me feedback anytime!  =)

  1. Kristy,
AWESOME idea!! Any thoughts on how this would work on glass?? I'm thinking some customized beer mugs would be pretty snazzy...
